Back-Country Ground School

Twin Oaks is hosting a CFI-led Backcountry Ground School for pilots looking to expand their skills in off-airport operations. This course is a mandatory prerequisite to schedule our backcountry flight training and provides the essential knowledge needed to operate safely in remote and challenging environments.

This ground school will cover a wide range of topics critical to backcountry flying. Pilots will learn essential techniques for operating in rugged terrain, including performance planning, density altitude considerations, and unimproved airstrip operations. The course will also emphasize risk management, decision-making, and emergency procedures specific to off-airport landings.

Additional topics include best practices for short and soft field operations, and understanding terrain, weather, and navigation in remote areas. Pilots will also review aircraft performance calculations necessary for high-altitude and confined-area takeoffs and landings.

The class will be held at the Twin Oaks hangar classroom. Multiple class dates will be offered—contact us for details. The cost of the course is $50, and completion is required to enroll in our backcountry flight training.

This ground school is an excellent opportunity to build the knowledge and confidence needed for safe and successful backcountry flying. Reserve your spot today!

Our Schedule

We host one 2-hour ground school during the first week of every month. We offer this course for all interested pilots, but we do require that you attend in person if you are signing up for our back-country flying course.
